In His Service Community Ministry is a church deeply rooted in the history and faith of Charles County, Maryland. It was formed in 2021 through the merger of Shiloh UMC and Indian Head UMC, two congregations with long and rich legacies of service in the Bryans Road and Indian Head communities. Shiloh UMC traces its origins back to 1835 when a small group of Methodists gathered in a log cabin known as "Halley’s House" on Shiloh Church Road. As the congregation grew, they moved to a one-room church before acquiring a six-acre parcel on northbound Route 210, where the current sanctuary was built in 1963. Over time, Shiloh played a vital role in the circuit of Methodist churches in Western Charles County, serving alongside congregations in La Plata, Chicamuxen, Pisgah, Bethel, Dentsville, and McFerrin Chapel. The church expanded further in 1996 with the addition of an Education Wing, which provided space for offices, classrooms, and ministry work. Meanwhile, Indian Head UMC emerged from La Plata Methodist Church in 1937, as a group of faithful Christians sought to establish a congregation in the growing military town of Indian Head, MD. The church quickly flourished, serving military families and the surrounding community for decades. In 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, both congregations—already worshiping together under the leadership of Pastor Banks—voted to unite, leading to the formation of In His Service Community Ministry. Today, In His Service remains dedicated to its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ and being a beacon of faith, hope, and love in the community. Their vision—God is calling us to be loving, growing disciples of Jesus—guides their commitment to outreach, worship, and service. The church continues to serve as a resource for community groups, address the needs of the poor, and create meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth. Whether through food drives, youth programs, or partnerships with local organizations, In His Service seeks to build strong relationships with its neighbors, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. As the community evolves, the church remains steadfast in its purpose: to be a place of worship, compassion, and transformation, where all are welcome to experience the grace and love of God. |
